To look at a suspicious area that might be cancer.Imaging tests might be done for a number of reasons both before and after a diagnosis of esophageal cancer, including: Imaging tests use x-rays, magnetic fields, sound waves, or radioactive substances to create pictures of the inside of your body.
You may also be referred to a gastroenterologist (a doctor specializing in digestive system diseases) for further tests and treatment. These could include imaging tests and/or biopsies of the esophagus. If the results of your history and physical exam suggest you might have esophageal cancer, more tests will be done. Your doctor will also examine you closely to look for possible signs of esophageal cancer and other health problems. If you have symptoms that might be caused by esophageal cancer, the doctor will ask about your medical history to learn about your symptoms and possible risk factors. If cancer is found, further tests will be done to help determine the extent ( stage) of the cancer. If esophagus cancer is suspected, exams, tests, and a biopsy (a sample of esophagus cells) will be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Now it is time to go.Esophagus cancers are usually found because of signs or symptoms a person is having. The speech therapist will give my family a special paper that tells them “tools” I can use to help me swallow and eat better. My swallow test is finished! The speech therapist will show me and my family my movie on TV. I may also have my favorite snack dipped in some of the pudding. The speech therapist may ask me to try some pudding. I will drink the special drink while they take my picture. The speech therapist will give me something to drink. The doctor will press a button to turn on my video. The machine will make a noise when it is moved, but it will not touch me. The doctor will move the special machine to make sure they take a good picture of me. The speech therapist will put on a special coat. They may put a special blanket on my lap. The therapist will ask me to sit in a special chair. The speech therapist may need to touch my tongue or cheeks. The speech therapist may ask me to open my mouth and do silly things with my tongue. The speech therapist will ask my family questions about me. The room will have a chair, a table, and a big machine to take my video. I will sit in the waiting room with my family. The receptionist will talk with my family and type information in the computer! We are at Radiology! We will go to the check-in window.
We will walk down the hall to Radiology (1J). We will get stickers with our names to put on our clothes.
We will leave our car with the valet or in the parking garage.įirst, we will go to the front desk. I will bring my favorite cup(s) and food.
